Dominic Alexis’ story continues in the second book of the Everest Series. The youngest member of the team at thirteen and the youngest climber to attempt climbing Mount Everest, Dominic faces from the outside with Ethan Zaph, the current record holder and former team member. His current team members are reluctant to help Dominic as they see him as a liability. When facing such a huge climb, every member counts and anyone that cannot keep up should be left behind.
When reaching Nepal, the team must learn to deal with the thinner air at altitude, a fiercely competitive world of base camp and their own personal problems. Told from the various perspectives of the team members, through emails, and website postings the tension among the team members only builds. Dominic must earn his team mates trust, and each is carrying his or her secrets.
As the team works their way through the beautiful villages of Nepal, Mount Everest looms overhead. In order to summit, the climbers must move from one camp to another in order to deal with the altitude and harsh conditions. The weather on the mountain can go from sunny to treacherous storms in a matter of minutes.
Notes for Kids:
After reading the first book, readers will be desperate to know what happens to Dominic on Mount Everest. This one leaves the reader hanging at the end, ready for the third and final book.
If you love adventure stories with high paced action, this is it! Korman does not disappoint in this second installment of the Everest series.
Notes for Parents:
Reluctant boy readers are often sucked into this series as well as the other Gordon Korman series such as The Island, and The Dive. Sixth and seventh grade boys looking for an adventure book, will be happy with this series. Although it is one story spreading across three books, it allows for the reluctant reader to be successful.
